Your Google account is the master key to Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, YouTube and your Android phone. Recovery works best when you use a device and place Google recognises. Follow these steps exactly, for your own account only.

1. Start official recovery — from a familiar device

  1. Open accounts.google.com/signin/recovery in a browser.
  2. Use the phone or computer you normally sign in from, on your usual Wi-Fi or mobile network — Google trusts familiar signals.
  3. Enter your Gmail address and tap Next.

2. Use the strongest proof you have

Google may offer several proofs, strongest first: a prompt on your signed-in phone (tap Yes / the number shown), a code to your recovery phone number, or a code to a recovery email. Use the first one you can complete. If you still remember an older password, enter it when asked — it genuinely helps Google verify you.

3. Answer carefully, do not guess wildly

If Google asks questions, answer as accurately as you can and use Try another way instead of guessing repeatedly. Several wrong guesses in a row can pause recovery — in that case wait and try again later from the same familiar device.

Recovering for Play Store / Android: If the phone itself is signed in, approve the sign-in prompt there first. Once the password is reset, the same new password works across Gmail, Photos, Drive and the Play Store.

4. After recovery — secure it in five minutes

  • Set a new strong password used nowhere else, at least 12 characters.
  • Check myaccount.google.com → Security → Your devices and sign out devices you do not recognise.
  • Confirm your recovery phone and recovery email are current.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification so a leaked password alone cannot enter again.
Scam warning: Google never asks for your password or code on a phone call, WhatsApp or a random website, and nobody can recover your account for a fee. Paying a recovery agent usually ends with the account stolen, not recovered.

Frequently asked questions

I no longer have the recovery phone number. Can I still recover?

Sometimes — use Try another way from a device and location you used before, and answer every question accurately. If Google cannot verify ownership, no third party can either.

How many times can I try recovery?

There is no benefit in rapid repeated attempts — wrong answers can trigger a waiting period. Make one careful attempt from your most familiar device; if asked to wait, wait, then retry once.

Will resetting the password log me out everywhere?

Google may sign you out of other devices for safety. Sign back in with the new password and review Your devices to confirm only your devices remain.
