It happens to everyone: one wrong tap and an important chat — with an address, a payment screenshot or a voice note — is gone. WhatsApp has no recycle bin, but deleted messages are often recoverable. Work through the methods in order and stop as soon as one works.
Method 1: Check the chat archive and the other person
First, make sure the chat is deleted and not just archived. Open WhatsApp → Archived (top of the chat list). If it is there, long-press it and tap Unarchive. Second, remember: deleting a chat on your phone does not delete it from the other person's phone. Asking them to forward the important messages is the simplest recovery of all.
Method 2: Restore from Google Drive / iCloud backup
WhatsApp backs up chats daily for most users. Check first: Settings → Chats → Chat backup — note the date of the last backup. It must be before you deleted the messages.
- Uninstall WhatsApp.
- Reinstall it from the Play Store / App Store.
- Verify your number and, when asked, tap Restore.
- Wait for messages and media to download on Wi-Fi.
Method 3: Restore the local backup (Android only)
Android WhatsApp keeps local backups for the last 7 days in Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Databases. Files are named with dates, like msgstore-2026-10-24.1.db.crypt14.
- Using a file manager, rename msgstore.db.crypt14 to a backup name so it is not overwritten.
- Rename the dated file from before the deletion to msgstore.db.crypt14.
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, verify your number, and tap Restore when the local backup is found (stay offline / on airplane mode if it tries Google Drive first).
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover messages deleted a year ago?
Only if a backup from that time still exists. Google Drive keeps the latest backup, and local Android backups last 7 days — so very old messages are usually not recoverable.
Do recovery apps from the Play Store work?
Most cannot recover messages without a backup — WhatsApp messages are encrypted and not stored elsewhere on the phone. Avoid apps that ask for payment or your WhatsApp verification code.
What about 'Delete for everyone' messages?
Once a message is deleted for everyone, it is removed from both phones. Notification-history apps on some Android phones may show the text if the notification arrived, but this is unreliable and not an official method.
