A slow laptop is rarely a dead laptop. On most machines the causes are a full or old hard disk, too many startup programs, pending updates, or heat. Work in this order and stop when speed returns.

1. Restart — and let updates finish

If the laptop has only been sleeping for weeks, do a full Restart. Then check Settings → Windows Update and let every pending update install. A laptop stuck mid-update cycle feels slow for days.

2. Remove startup programs

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager → Startup apps. Disable everything you do not need at boot: game launchers, Adobe and Spotify auto-start, printer helpers. Keep antivirus enabled. This is the biggest boot-time fix.

3. Check disk space — keep 15 percent free

Open This PC. If the C drive bar is red or nearly full, Windows has no working room. Use Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files to clear safely, empty Downloads of installers, and uninstall large games you no longer play.

4. Is it an HDD? That is the real bottleneck

In Task Manager → Performance, if Disk sits at 100 percent during simple tasks and the drive is an old mechanical HDD, no setting fully fixes it. Replacing an HDD with an SSD is the single biggest speed upgrade for an old laptop — a shop can clone your data to it. Check RAM too: 4 GB is the practical minimum struggle point today.

100 percent disk from one app: Task Manager → Processes, sort by Disk. If one app owns the disk all day, update it or uninstall it. If Windows Update or antivirus owns it for an hour after boot, that is normal finishing work — let it complete.

5. Uninstall programs you never use

Settings → Apps → Installed apps, sort by size. Remove trial antivirus suites (Windows Security is built in and enough for most people), toolbars, duplicate cleaners and old games.

6. Scan for malware

Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. Adware and miners are a classic cause of a laptop that became slow suddenly.

7. Fix heat — fans and vents

A hot laptop slows itself down to protect the processor. Use it on a hard flat surface, clean vents with a soft brush, and keep the back raised slightly. Constant loud fan plus slowness after all steps above means the inside needs professional cleaning and fresh thermal paste.

8. Set the right power mode

On mains power: Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Best performance. An accidental power-saver mode makes even good laptops feel broken.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a laptop take to start?

With an SSD and clean startup, roughly 15 to 40 seconds to a usable desktop. Several minutes usually means too many startup apps or a failing/old HDD.

Will resetting Windows make it fast again?

A clean reset does remove years of clutter, but back up everything first and expect to reinstall your programs. Try the steps in this guide first — most laptops recover without a reset.

Is an SSD upgrade worth it for a 7-year-old laptop?

If the processor and RAM are reasonable and the battery is acceptable, yes — an SSD makes an old laptop feel years younger for far less than a new machine.
