Most charging problems are the cable, the adapter, or pocket lint in the port — not the phone battery. Test in this order and you will know the faulty part within ten minutes, without opening the phone.
1. Swap the cable first
Charging cables fail internally long before they look broken. Borrow a known-good cable (ideally the original) and test for 15 minutes. If charging becomes normal, your cable was the whole problem — this is the answer surprisingly often.
2. Swap the adapter and the socket
Test a different adapter of decent quality, plugged directly into a wall socket — not a weak multi-plug or a laptop USB port, which charge very slowly. Fast charging needs a compatible adapter and cable; a mismatch gives slow charging with no fault anywhere.
3. Clean the charging port — gently
Shine a light inside the port: pocket lint packs in there and stops the plug seating fully. With the phone off, ease lint out with a wooden toothpick or the SIM tool used very gently along the edges — never a metal pin scraped hard, and never blow with your mouth (moisture). If the plug now clicks in fully, you found it.
4. Restart and check temperature
Restart the phone — charging controllers are software too. If the phone is very hot, charging slows or pauses by design; let it cool in shade first. Remove a thick case while fast charging.
5. Check battery health signs
Percentage jumping (40 to 15 in minutes), shutdowns at 20 percent, or a bulging back panel mean a worn or swollen battery. A swollen battery is a safety issue: stop fast charging, do not press it, and visit an authorised service centre.
6. Software causes
Install pending system updates. Test charging in Safe Mode — if an app was hammering the processor, drain outpaced charging and it looked like a charging fault. Also try charging with the phone fully off: steady charging while off but not while on points to software or heavy use, not hardware.
7. When it really is the port
If multiple good cables sit loosely, charging only works at one angle after cleaning, or the phone charges only wirelessly, the port itself is worn or damaged. That is a service-centre repair — cleaning and cable swaps cannot fix a bent connector.
Frequently asked questions
Is slow charging bad for the battery?
No — slow charging is actually gentler. Heat is the enemy, not slowness. Fast charging daily is acceptable on modern phones, but avoid gaming while fast charging.
Can a cheap cable damage my phone?
A very poor cable or adapter can deliver unstable power and heat. Use the original or a reputable brand — charging accessories are the wrong place to save a few rupees.
My phone charges only when switched off. What does that mean?
Usually an app or process is consuming as fast as it charges, or a software fault. Test in Safe Mode, update the system, and if it persists after a backup and reset, have the battery checked.
